Method for Prevention of Tripping of Generating Sources During a Frequency Decline Emergency

The protection method relates to the field of power engineering, particularly, to the anti-emergency automatics, and can be used for prevention of a blackout as a result of tripping of generating sources caused by a frequency decline emergency (frequency avalanche). Under the conditions of power deficit the frequency declines; as a result, the productivity of the auxiliary equipment (boiler feed pumps, gas turbine compressors and the circulating pumps of nuclear power plants) decreases. Consequently, decrease is also in the steam generation by the boilers of thermal power plants, the power of combined-cycle gas turbines, and the cooling of nuclear reactors (which increases a reactor's power above the allowable level). To maintain the generating sources in operation and to prevent a power system's collapse, the capacity of the said units should be reduced by controlling them according to the abilities of auxiliary equipment. By contrast, the steam turbines as steam consumers, in response to a frequency decline - increase their capacity, causing a further decrease in the steam pressure; this results in the operation of protection and the disconnection of generating units due to loss of the static stability of thermal equipment. To avoid this, by frequency decline the steam turbines should be shifted from the frequency regulation to the steam pressure regulation, which would provide tracking closely the operating mode of steam generating equipment in the circumstances of frequency decline, thus making it possible to avert disconnections of generating sources due to the mentioned static stability loss.
