Method and Apparatus for Efficient Direct Generation and Delivery of Ultrashort Laser Pulses
A method and apparatus are disclosed for the direct generation and efficient non-dispersive delivery of broadband few-cycle femtosecond laser pulses by temporal solitonic compression of low-energy ultrashort laser pulses in nonlinear waveguides with constant (spatially independent) negative dispersion. The input laser pulses are sent through a linear optical system for adjustment of their energy, chirp and duration (1) and are coupled by a focusing optic (2) into a nonlinear waveguide with negative (or anomalous) dispersion (3) where simultaneous spectral broadening and temporal compression result in a diverging beam of broadband compressed pulses directly at the output of the waveguide. The compressed pulses are sent through a near- dispersionless delivery system composed of a second focusing optic (4) and a broadband linear system (5) that compensates for dispersion.
