Production of a transparent aluminum oxide protective layer on a glass substrate comprises placing a glass substrate in a coating chamber, feeding aluminum-containing precursor compounds in liquid or gas form into the chamber, converting the precursor compounds into the gas phase and depositing an aluminum oxide layer on the substrate from the gas phase. The aluminum oxide is applied at a rate of 0.1-3 nm/minute. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Transparent protective layer produced by the above process; and (2) Glass substrate covered with the protective layer.
