DJ Crowdsources New Music with the Whole World

March 6, 2013 By IdeaConnection

AviciiEarlier this year we put up a post about DJ and producer Avicii’s attempt to create a crowdsourced hit song.

He sent out a call to action to his fans and fellow musicians to submit audio samples, effects and melodies. The track has now been finished and is on general release.

It is called ‘X You’ and involved Avicii searching through 12, 951 submissions from 4,199 individuals from 140 countries.

Preparing the Mix

During the submission period the star DJ selected weekly semi-finalists and fans voted for their favorite sounds and beats to be used in the final mix.  The song was premiered recently at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

The crowdsourcing music project was a collaboration with Ericsson, At Night Management, and Universal Music Sweden.

“It starts a flow of thinking for all industries to re-invent the way they collaborate across time and borders,” said Hans Vestberg, President and CEO, Ericsson.

“Music is one of the first industries being transformed by networking, collaboration and new technologies. We now see TV, publishing and the whole entertainment industry going down the same path.”

You can listen to the finished crowdsourced track by clicking on the video below:

You can also dive deeper into the music on Avicii’s website where he’s posted the beats, melodies, bass lines, effects, and drum patterns that were submitted.

The track is now widely available on various digital platforms so we’ll soon know if it makes a significant dent in the charts.

Whatever happens, the response to the project was incredible allowing everyone from trained musicians to showers singers and ordinary fans to participate in the creation of new music.
