The world's first commercial 5G services were launched this week, in South Korea and the US heralding a new wave of capabilities for smartphone users.
While the innovative technology is being trialed in numerous pilot projects all over the world, commercial applications are only now just coming online.
In South Korea, three mobile carriers launched 5G services earlier this week, while in the US Verizon launched 5G services in two places, Chicago and Minneapolis.
What is 5G?
5G stands for Fifth Generation and it's the latest technology upgrade to international standards that dictate how mobile communications should work. And it's got a lot of people very excited.
5G technology brings with it a world of new capabilities such as higher bandwidth, greater capacity, less delay and better security. Samsung said its first 5G device, the Galaxy S10 5G offers speeds that are 20 times faster than current phones.
DJ Koh, president of IT and mobile communications at Samsung Electronics said it has begun “a new era where the incredible speed and connectivity of 5G becomes a reality”.
