Crowdsourcing a Medical Instagram

July 21, 2013 By IdeaConnection

Website Search2Sharing photographs is one of the most popular fun social media activities. The tools and technologies that make it possible have also been harnessed for business applications.  For example, retailers making use of Pinterest to raise awareness of their products. And now the medical field is benefiting too.

Figure 1 is a photo sharing application that allows healthcare professionals to learn from each other by uploading images of conditions.  This will create a unique reference library as well as create discussions around those pictures.

It’s a kind of Instagram for the healthcare industry.

“I was trying to find a safe way to capture and share medical images in real time,” said Dr. Joshua Landy, a Toronto-based critical care specialist and a cofounder of Figure 1. “The tool I needed just didn’t exist.”

Knowledge Booster

Figure 1 is attempting to create a powerful educational resource by harnessing the knowledge of its users. The smart tool could lead to swifter diagnosis in unusual cases and improve knowledge of some medical conditions.

When they are sharing photos, medical professionals can make comments and add notations and tags which will help with searches.

Patient Privacy

Patient privacy is a number one concern and the app features some technical wizardry that auto-detects and blocks faces and distinguishing marks such as tattoos.

The app is free to download from iTunes and is currently only available on North America.  The hope is that eventually it can be used in many more territories.
