Crowdfunding could be ushering in a new era of movie development, delivering films that producers know the audience wants to see.

Veronica Mars was a cult hit TV show about a teenage private eye that ran for three seasons between 2004 and 2007.

The show’s creator had an idea for a movie but his pitch didn’t convince studio bosses.  So he turned to the crowd, hoping to raise $2 million in 30 days. Within hours a number of Kickstarter records were shattered.

The Veronica Mars Movie Project became the Fastest Kickstarter project to hit $1 million (4 hours, 24 minutes). After 10 hours it became the fastest project to hit the $2 million mark. At the time of writing this post today the fund stands at more than $3.3 million from over 50,000 backers. And there are still 28 days left to go.

This is an incredible feat, even more so when you realize that although the show was hugely popular with its audience, it was not a runaway ratings success. It reportedly averaged just under 2.5 million viewers per episode.

The Hollywood Reporter wonders if and how the success of this crowdfunding project will change movie development. Perhaps it could also lead to TV and film execs rebooting old franchises?

Full Steam Ahead

For Veronica Mars, it’s going to be a busy few months thanks to the pockets and wallets of fans.  Shooting is now able to take place this summer. Then the plan is to give the movie a limited theatrical release early next year followed by digital distribution.
