bynd2015-hubsphotos-slide5One message came through loud and clear at the BYND 2015 Global Youth Summit in Costa Rica this week – and that was that young people from across the world want governments to support innovation and technology.

The United Nations-sponsored conference was attended by 700 young people and followed online by at least another 3,000 who also contributed ideas to social media hubs in 25 different countries.

Participants emphasized their belief that innovation will be the key to a new global development agenda.  They also asked for education systems to equip them with marketable and relevant skills so they can compete in the global marketplace.

This request was included in the Global Youth Summit Declaration, one of the outcomes of the meeting that is intended to influence decision making at the UN.

Global Youth Declaration

“The key to a new global development agenda is innovation. Old methods and systems are poorly suited to the transformed and interconnected communities we live in today. We call on member states, civil society and the private sector to foster innovation to build the future we want.”

Among the numerous issues the declaration is pressing world leaders for are:

  • Access to education and knowledge sharing regardless of location and ability to pay
  • A request for member states to make voting, openness and accountability more feasible online
  • A call for innovative use of communication technologies to allow young citizens to communicate with their leaders
  • Innovative measures to lower barriers to youth employment

students have their innovations but they are not willing to pay to bring it out, the proposals they made should be encouraged and studied
