New IdeaConnection Open Innovation Challenges

September 22, 2013 By IdeaConnection

Drinking_waterArsenic contamination of the groundwater in Bangladesh is a huge problem. Up to 77 million people have been exposed to toxic levels of the chemical in drinking water, according to a report in the medical journal The Lancet. The World Health Organisation (WHO) calls the arsenic situation “the largest mass poisoning of a population in history.”

Can you help the people of Bangladesh by designing an arsenic removal water filter? IdeaConnection has teamed up with Chemists Without Borders to issue an open innovation challenge for an inexpensive water filter that removes arsenic to less than 50 ppb (Bangladeshi standard) or, ideally, to less than 10 ppb (WHO standard).

The filter needs to be designed so that it can be manufactured as a cottage industry in Bangladesh.

There is an urgent need for this technology as the risk of arsenic poisoning is increasing every day.

Further Challenges

IdeaConnection and Chemists Without Borders have four additional open innovation challenges that are looking for innovative solutions. These are:

Arsenic Penny-per-Test – design an easy-to-use arsenic test kit that costs less than a penny to produce and can be made locally in Bangladesh. Learn more.

Contaminated Water Testing “Tool Kit” – design a portable tool kit for testing water for major biological, organic and inorganic contaminants. The kit must be cost-effective and easy to manufacture. Learn more.

Electronic Waste – design an action plan or strategy for chemists to deal with the growing problem of hazardous electronic waste (e-waste). Learn more.

Contaminated Water Treatment “Tool Kit” – design a portable tool kit for treating water for major contaminants such as mercury, lead, arsenic and chemical pollutants. Learn more.
