One of the biggest thorns in many a commuter’s side is slow moving traffic.  Here’s a quick rundown of a few crowdsourcing initiatives that were designed to get people from A to B without too much interference.

The Cairo Transport App Challenge

This open innovation contest asked participants to design apps to help unclog Cairo’s roads.  More than 30 teams sent in their ideas and an app called Beliaa was chosen as the winner.  In the event of a breakdown, the innovative program sends a car’s GPS location and a map to roadside assistance centers.  Other functions include up-to-date information on congestion hotspots and automatic reminders of when your car needs a service.

The 2011 NYC BigApps 2.0 Competition

The 2011 contest was won by ‘Roadify’, an iPhone app that connects to official transit schedules and sends alerts from other commuters about the latest road, bus and subway conditions.  The app beat more than 600 other ideas to reach first place.

The Seoul Cycle Design Competition 2010

This was an international open innovation contest for new bicycle designs that will help Seoul to re-shape its urban environment. The Grand Winner was Bike 2.0, a next generation bicycle with a pedal-powered internal generator that’s wired to a rear hub motor.  Other novel design features included a stepless gearbox to control pedalling speed and a regenerative coaster brake instead of brake levers and discs.  It was designed to be used as a substitute for a conventional bicycle or a motorized vehicle.
