Sports Crowdfunding Platform Gets off the Starting Block

September 10, 2012 By IdeaConnection

On your mark, get set, go! A new crowdfunding platform has been launched that’s entirely for sports projects.

Capitalizing on the momentum and excitement generated by the Olympics and Paralympics a New Zealand website called Sportfunder aims to help individuals and clubs get their initiatives off the ground, even if they don’t reach their funding targets.

Sports funding can sometimes be difficult to come by, especially in the current financial climate as businesses and local authorities look at ways to trim their budgets and save the pennies. So Sportfunder is a timely and much needed resource, offering a way for athletes to receive valuable sponsorship to help them achieve their sporting goals.

It works in a similar way to other crowdfunding sites, and funding requests could come from a club, team, school or individual, amateurs and professionals.

How it Works

Users post details of the pet projects they require funding for, then they set a financial target and a timeframe of between 10 and 90 days.

The activities don’t necessarily have to be an actual sport, just as long as they are sport-related. For example a proposal for a sports book or documentary could be posted on the site.

Backers can pledge their support, and once the funding goal has been reached can release their funds through PayPal. By way of thanks they’ll receive a gift decided by the creators of the project. People can also donate money immediately regardless of whether a proposal will come to fruition.

Sportfunder takes a 5% commission of the total raised by a project to help maintain and promote the site.
