Sports Illustrated to Crowdsource its Front Cover

November 26, 2012 By IdeaConnection

Sports Illustrated and crowdsourcingReaders and fans of Sports Illustrated are being invited to choose the cover photo of the magazine’s year-end cover.

Voting takes places on the its Facebook fan page and three categories are presented: moment of the year which will appear in the December 31st edition, and picture and performer of the year which will feature in the previous two issues.

It’s the second time in the publication’s 61-year history that readers have been given the opportunity to select the end of year cover.

The first time was last year when they selected an image of paralyzed Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand leading his teammates onto the field from his wheelchair (see picture above).

Useful Exercise

Though certainly not the most revolutionary of crowd-based ideas it is a useful exercise for Sports Illustrated as it creates good word of mouth. Fans welcome the chance to have a say in how one of their favorite publications will look.

It”s an easy to manage initiative as well, certainly a lot easier than if readers had been asked to send in their own images.

The voting started on November 22nd and each category is open for a week. Fans have to rank the top five in that week’s category.

Currently, voting is open for the top sporting performance, and the five choices are:

  • Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey
  • Double gold medal-winning Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas
  • Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis
  • The current 10,000 meters Olympic champion and 5000 meters Olympic, World and European champion, Mo Farah
  • Four-time Olympic gold medalist, Missy Franklin
