Furniture Store Uses the Crowd to Select Product Ranges

March 18, 2012 By IdeaConnection

The crowdsourcing concept is helping to transform the relationship between retailer and consumer with the latter being given more of a say about what the former produces and sells.

We’ve seen it with t-shirts, fashion lines and books to mention just a few examples, and now a company in Brazil is asking the crowd to help it determine which furniture to manufacture and market.

Consumers visiting the Galatea website can browse a range of products and vote for their favourite items. Those pieces of furniture that garner the most votes are selected for production.  Customers who voted for particular items are given a discount off them once they roll off the production line.  They can vote for up to ten percent of the company’s lines in any one month.

This crowdsourcing business model is also a boon to designers who are able to see which designs are popular with the public.

Benefits

Crowdsourcing can bring a lot to retailers, and those companies that understand that customers want to have a much greater input into what they buy, are starting to reap the benefits.

By actively engaging their customer base, businesses can steal a march on their competitors. Not listening to the crowd could jeopardise a company’s market position.

From simple customizing of colours or styles to building products from scratch, crowdsourcing can offer a wealth of opportunities for all players.

That is one good way to market your products. Having your customers' advice can be really beneficial to the company since they can cater to what their customers' needs and wants.
