Unilever Extends its Open Innovation Platform

March 21, 2012 By IdeaConnection

The open innovation team from Unilever has announced that it is extending its collaborative approach with external partners with the launch of a new ambitious online platform.

The company is looking for new designs and technologies to help it achieve its aim of doubling the size of its business while cutting down on its environmental impact.

Unilever has a long open innovation track record, but this is the first time that it has made its projects so public in an open forum.

Visitors to the open innovation platform will see that each project is defined by a “want” – the solution the company is looking to develop with external partners.

Currently, some of these wants include:

  • Developing a new active ingredient that combats viruses, is safe to use on skin, and exhibits wide-ranging anti-viral efficacy.
  • Creating lighter and more sustainable packaging that is multipurpose, lightweight and cost effective.
  • Developing ‘wow’ factor toothpastes with new flavours, sensations and ingredients.
  • Coming up with a way to reduce the amount of sodium in food but without compromising the taste of Unilever’s products.
  • Searching for ideas for sustainable showers that give a great bathing experience but with less water and at lower temperatures.

“Our global research and development teams consistently make innovation breakthroughs which keep Unilever at the forefront of product development and design,” said Roger Leech, Unilever Open Innovation Scouting Director.

“But we know that the world is full of brilliant people with brilliant ideas, and we are constantly looking for new ways to tap into this potential by working with partners who have a fresh, serious approach to developing exciting new technology.”
