Open Innovation for the Greater Good

January 5, 2018 By IdeaConnection

In addition to helping businesses solve tough challenges, innovate and bring new products and services to market open innovation is also used to tackle a range of social and conservation issues across the globe.

From time to time we look at this in the open innovation success stories section of our website. Here’s a snapshot of a few stories we’ve covered that highlight the ingenuity and wisdom of the crowd.

A constellation of mobile applications that allow blood donors to connect with NGOs and people in need. This was the winner of the 2014 Shaping a Better Future Grant Challenge hosted by the Coca-Cola Company.

Solar Conduction Dryer – an innovation that provides solar-powered food dehydrators to rural farmers to curb food spoilage and create secondary income from preserved produce. This was one of the winning projects in the 2013 iteration of the Dell Social Innovation Challenge.

A peer-to-peer service for local communities to tackle logistical challenges in emerging market nations. This was the winning concept of the 2016 Ideas for Action contest hosted by the World Bank Group and the Wharton School of Business. This open innovation competition seeks to find solutions to help address poverty, one of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Vespex Wasp Bait – a wasp-baiting system for wide-area wasp control. This innovation was the 2015 winner of the World Wildlife Fund’s Conservation Innovation Awards, an annual contest to find and support novel ways to protect New Zealand’s diversity. The purpose of the baiting system is to reduce the number of Vespula wasps which are a threat to the native ecosystem.
