Listening ~ without prejudice.
Do not start solving the problem before all the facts are before you, (this is difficult because as a designer often the solution is obvious, or is initially given by the client).
Go and see the problem ~ often the client can not describe well enough for you to really understand what is needed.
Talk to the users, preferably without the boss standing next to you.
Sometimes the 'problem' is not the problem it is the systems that need to be changed.
