LaserCan aerosol spray painting attachment

Summary:
LaserCan is an ergonomic circular band that slips over the top of regular aerosol spray cans. In front is a single adjustable laser the user sets in the center of the spray pattern at the recommended distance. It also has an LED light to brighten the spray area.

Full Description:
LaserCan solves the aerosol spray painting dilemma for most users - poor coverage and paint runs, which lead to rework, frustration, excessive use of paint, and increased release of harmful air emissions. LaserCan ensures that first time or frequent users spray a quality finish the first time, with less mess and better end result.

LaserCan is an ergonomic circular band that slips over the top of any regular aerosol spray can. It is equipped in front with a single adjustable laser, that the user sets in the center of the spray pattern when the can is at the recommended distance.

Reduce dripping and overspray

The laser dot is then used to allow the spray to be applied correctly, and to use 50% overlap to get good coverage without runs. It also aids start and stop at the edge, or painting different shapes accurately, thereby reducing overspray and waste.

Illuminate the paint surface

It also has an LED light to brighten the spray area. The multi-function switch allows the laser and LED to be turned on or off in combinations.

Developed by a leading university

The LaserCan was invented and designed by Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC) staff at the University of Northern Iowa. The IWRC is a nationally recognized painter training center. IWRC initiated and operates STAR4Defense, training military spray technicians from around the country in proper spray techniques. IWRC also has created the VirtualPaint, the leader in VR technology for paint technician training, and the LaserPaint, an attachment for professional paint spray guns to increase targeting and efficiency. LaserPaint has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through their Environmental Technology Verification Program.

The ultimate painting tool

Ask any aerosol spray can user if they are satisfied with their results, and 70% will say NO. LaserCan increases satisfaction with aerosol spray paint results.

The major problems reported by users are dripping, running, and poor coverage. In short, a poor paint job that may often have to be done over.

The LaserCan solves these problems in multiple ways. First, the adjustable laser is moved to the center of the spray pattern while holding the can at the recommended distance and spraying a test pattern. This will allow the user to keep the can at the correct distance by keeping the laser dot in the center of the spray pattern.

Secondly, the laser dot shows exactly where the paint is laid down on the part being sprayed. It allows for 50% overlap, where the second pass is targeted at the bottom edge of the first pass. This provides optimum coverage, and greatly reduces the possible runs or sags.

The targeting also allows the spray to be focused on unusual shapes, along edges, and on hard to reach surfaces. Paint reaches the target piece instead of spraying over a wide area.

The LED light is useful in highlighting the piece even in normal light. In low light situations it can make a huge difference in seeing where the spray should go. The LED can be used with the laser beam, or alone, due to the multi-function switch.

LaserCan turns a poor paint job into one that looks like it was done by a pro. It also alleviates consumer dissatisfaction with the paint job and finished piece. LaserCan puts the pride back in painting.

Green is good

Aerosol spray paints contain many chemicals that are harmful to the environment. LaserCan reduces or eliminates much of this potential harm by simply helping the user to do a better job at painting. This provides a great paint job with fewer air emissions and less wasted paint and chemicals.

Spray paint contains many Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which contribute substantially to atmospheric ozone levels. The U.S. EPA has established air quality criteria, and ozone is one of the criteria that is most often exceeded, to the detriment of human health and environment.

LaserCan reduces the emission of VOCs into the environment by getting more paint on the part, and eliminating the need to redo the painting due to poor coverage, runs or other defects.

LaserCan is truly a “green” product, protecting and improving the environment. Air quality control agencies in every state are likely to have an interest in seeing this product succeed as they search for ever more ways to reduce ozone producing VOCs.

Problem this idea/invention addresses:
LaserCan solves the aerosol spray painting dilemma for most users - poor coverage and paint runs, which lead to rework, frustration, excessive use of paint, and increased release of harmful air emissions.

LaserCan ensures that first time or frequent user spray a quality finish the first time, with less mess and better end result. A quality paint job can easily be achieved with the LaserCan on the first try.
