3D-Printed Metamaterial Machines

3D-Printed Metamaterial Machines
Oct-01-16
Using metamaterials, scientists have developed a way to 3D-print a structure with moving parts from one piece of material.

Demonstrated by a team from the Hasso-Plattner Institut, the printing technique involves varying the density of the material at specific locations in the structure using “shear cells.” These areas of weaker, less densely-packed cells will deform in a predetermined way when force is applied, resulting in a machine with moving parts created from a single block of homogenous material.
