Advanced Dive Behavior Tag Goes Deeper, Lasts Longer

Advanced Dive Behavior Tag Goes Deeper, Lasts Longer
Dec-24-16
The Advanced Dive Behavior tracking tag will offer scientists a deeper insight into whale behavior.

The tag was created by scientists from Oregon State University to withstand the rigors of the ocean while also lasting up to seven weeks at a time (compared to the single-day use of current devices). The ADB tracker attaches to the whale's upper body, collecting data on underwater whale behavior such as feeding, preferred water temperature and how they are affected by passing ships.

The tracker will transmit its data every second until the end of its lifespan, whereupon it will detach from the whale and float to the surface for retrieval.
