Artificial beta cells able to release insulin on demand could offer an alternative to injections.
Developed by teams from the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University, the cells contain small vesicles filled with insulin. When the blood glucose increases, the vesicles will undergo a chemical change that triggers them to release the insulin into the bloodstream.
The team now plans to find a way to deliver the cells painlessly using a skin patch.
