Artificial Blood Vessels Will Give Way as New Ones Grow

Artificial Blood Vessels Will Give Way as New Ones Grow
May-07-15
Researchers have created artificial blood vessels that will degrade over time as the natural vessel develops.

Created by a team from the Vienna University of Technology and Vienna Medical University in Austria, the blood vessels are made from a specialized polymer that has been spun in an electric field into fine threads. The slightly porous fabric allows a small amount of blood to enter and enrich the walls of the material, encouraging the migration of endogenous cells. These cells eventually colonize the synthetic material and turn it into natural tissue as the polymer degrades.

The artificial vessels have already undergone successful trials in laboratory rats, and could make their way into humans within a few years.
