Battery-Free Pacemaker Based on Wristwatch Technology

Battery-Free Pacemaker Based on Wristwatch Technology
Sep-04-14
A new battery-free pacemaker based on an automatic-winding wristwatch could eliminate the need for battery-replacement surgeries.

The pacemaker prototype, designed by PhD candidate Adrian Zurbuchen, is powered by the motion of the heart itself. When the heart beats against the device, the clockwork components within begin rotating, causing them to wind a spring that subsequently unwinds to power a generator. That electrical energy is then stored in the device's buffer capacity where it is used to power the custom-made pacemaker.

The new device has been successfully tested in domestic pigs, and the team's next step is to integrate the components into one device and eliminate the need for leads.
