A new test for prostate cancer is not only more affordable and reliable than the current PSA-based version, it is also safer.
Critics of the PSA prostate screening technology argue that the test is inaccurate and causes unnecessary discomfort, and the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force actually recommends avoiding the PSA test altogether.
As an alternative, Dr. Qun “Treen” Huo from the University of Central Florida has developed a screening tool for prostate cancer that costs only one dollar. The test utilizes gold nanoparticles that will attract certain cancer biomarkers in a drop of blood, causing the nanoparticles to increase in size slightly and clump together. By using a nanoparticle-enabled dynamic light scattering assay(NanoDLSay) to measure the size of the particles, the clinician can determine whether the patient has cancer as well as its level of advancement.
