Biomaterial Filling Could Reduce Root Canals

Biomaterial Filling Could Reduce Root Canals
Jul-04-16
Researchers have created a new synthetic biomaterial filling that can stimulate stem cell growth and help reduce the need for root canals.

According to research, about 15 percent of cavity fillings fail, which in turn lead to root canals. To help prevent these painful—and expensive—procedures, the team’s synthetic biomaterial filling can be injected into the tooth and then hardened with UV light. In tests, the bio-filling helped stimulate the tooth’s own healing properties, which could reduce the rate of failing fillings.
