Building Biodegradable Electronics

Building Biodegradable Electronics
May-04-17
Researchers have created a flexible, lightweight, biodegradable circuitry that could help reduce the amount of e-waste discarded each year.

The biodegradable circuits are manufactured on a cellulose base, with the remainder of the system made of carbon-based compounds and iron electrodes. At the end of its lifespan, the device can be dissolved with a weak acid, such as household vinegar.

According to the team, the biodegradable circuitry could not only help reduce waste in landfills, but also lead to temporary environmental and medical sensors that dissolve when their functions are complete.
