Capturing Carbon With Baking Soda

Capturing Carbon With Baking Soda
Feb-07-15
Using regular baking soda, researchers have created tiny capsules able to capture carbon dioxide from power plants for controlled release later.

The microcapsules are made up of a highly permeable plastic shell that contains a sodium carbonate solution. (Sodium carbonate is the main ingredient in baking soda.) When the carbon dioxide molecules enter the capsules, they are captured by the solution and held for release later.

According to the team, the encapsulation method is much more environmentally friendly than previous methods of CO2 capture, and also simplifies the process of moving the captured CO2 to the release towers.
