A transparent “window into the brain” could make ultrasound treatments more effective.
During ultrasound treatments for neurological disorders, much of the ultrasound is blocked by the skull before it reaches the brain. To ensure more of the rays reach their target, the research team created an implant made of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ)Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), a shatter-resistant, biocompatible ceramic. The material is implanted into the skull, where its low porosity allows for the easy passage of ultrasound waves.
