ChainFORM Modular Robot Takes Shape

ChainFORM Modular Robot Takes Shape
Dec-11-16
The innovative ChainFORM robot from MIT can morph into an array of different forms, based on how its modules are assembled.

Created by the team at MIT, the ChainFORM bot is an evolution of a previous iteration called LineFORM, and is made up of a series of modules equipped with touch detection and motor actuation, as well as a servo motor and microcontroller. When the modules are brought together, the system is able to determine their number and arrangement, allowing the units to perform different functions.

According to Ken Nagasaki, a researcher on the project, “We foresee ChainFORM to be used for mainly two practical scenarios: dynamic computer interfaces and prototyping tools for animation and interaction.”
