Clay-Based Packaging Keeps Foods Fresher

Clay-Based Packaging Keeps Foods Fresher
Aug-23-17
An innovative clay-based antimicrobial packaging could help keep foods fresh longer.

Developed by a team from the Sabanci University, the packaging is made of polyethylene film embedded with hollow halloysite nanotubes filled with a natural antibacterial essential oil. The nanotubes help keep oxygen from entering the film and water vapor from escaping, while also absorbing ethylene gas—which hastens food ripening and spoilage.
