The CLIP printer from the startup Carbon3D eschews layer-by-layer printing in favor of growing the material from a pool of resin.
The CLIP (Continuous Liquid Interface Production) printer creates its assigned objects by controlling the interaction of light and oxygen. As the printer "grows" the objects from a pool of resin, UV light is projected through an oxygen-permeable window (compared to a contact lens). This allows the CLIP to create a thin layer of uncured resin between the window and the object being printed, in turn allowing the object to grow continuously as different UV images are projected into the pool of resin. This process not only enables the creation of more complex shapes, but it is also between 25 and 100 times faster than conventional 3D printers.
