Sensor-laden Capsule Sends Gas Information from the Gut

Sensor-laden Capsule Sends Gas Information from the Gut
Mar-18-15
A new sensor able to transmit gas information from within the gut could help in the diagnosis of disease as well as help assess a person's general health.

The capsule, developed by teams at RMIT and Monash universities in Australia, is equipped with a gas sensor, microprocessor, battery and a wireless transmitter. After the capsule has been swallowed, it will measure different gas concentrations as it travels through the intestinal track, sending the data to a smartphone or tablet. At the end of the journey, the capsule will leave the body naturally.

The technique has already been proven successful on animal trials, and the team is now working to idealize it for humans.
