Cooltech Fridge Replaces Gas with Magnets

Jun-16-16 The Cooltech magnetic refrigeration system eschews gas for a more eco-friendly, magnetic alternative.

The Magnetic Gas Refrigeration System takes advantage of the magnetocaloric effect, by which a magnetic field can be used to alter a material’s temperature. Magnetocaloric materials are moved through the system, where they are subjected to a cycle of magnetization while a water coolant flows past them. This allows the heat from the inside of the fridge to be transferred to the outside. Although the technology is not entirely new, this is the first time the system has been compact enough for practical use.

According to the team, the system could account for an energy savings of up to 50 percent.
