Creating Transparent Wood

Creating Transparent Wood
Apr-01-16
By removing lignin from wood fibers, researchers have created a “transparent wood” that could replace conventional glass.

Developed by a team from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, transparent wood process begins by removing the lignin from the wood fibers, rendering the wood white, and then mixing the material with prepolymerized methyl methacrylate (PMMA). This final step changed the refractive index of the wood and rendered it transparent.

Though this is not the first example of transparent wood material, the new process is easier to scale up and more suitable for mass production.
