Desk-Sized Turbine Spun by Carbon Dioxide

Desk-Sized Turbine Spun by Carbon Dioxide
Apr-16-16
A desk-sized turbine in development from GE is powered by carbon dioxide instead of steam, and could one day power an entire town.

Still in the prototype phase, the turbine is powered by carbon dioxide that has been heated to a supercritical fluid level—neither a liquid nor a gas. By using CO2 in this way, the turbine achieves a higher heat to electricity transfer efficiency, and can come to full operation very quickly. As an added bonus, the CO2 can be reheated and pressurized to be used again, so no waste is created.
