A smartphone attachment able to perform a diagnosis within minutes could drastically simplify the early detection of infectious diseases.
The microfluidic cassette, created by a team from Columbia University, uses the immunoassay process to detect HIV or syphilis antibodies from just a few drops of blood. A smartphone serves as the power source while also providing on-screen instructions, and the accuracy of the results meets the "gold standard" of laboratory based tests.
According to the team, the new device holds promise that "coupling microfluidics with recent advances in consumer electronics can make certain laboratory-based diagnostics accessible to almost any population with access to smartphones."
