Drug-Delivering Bacteria Controlled by Heat

Drug-Delivering Bacteria Controlled by Heat
Nov-15-16
Researchers have engineered bacteria to deliver drugs within the body and then self-destruct.

While microbes are being tested as a way to ferry medication, controlling the bacteria has proven difficult. As an option, the team from Caltech developed “walkie-talkies” for the bacteria that allows the team to communicate with microbes through changes in temperature. By triggering a specific temperature, which can be done with ultrasound, the bacteria could be ordered to release the medication on command and at a precise location.
