Easy-Use App Diagnoses Pneumonia by Breathing Rate

Jun-25-14 New parents can breathe a bit easier with a new respiratory app that allows them to accurately monitor their child's respiratory rate and screen for early signs of pneumonia.

The simple, yet inspired, app requires that the parent tap the touchscreen of their smartphone each time the child takes a breath. The app then calculates the patient's breathing rate and displays the info on the device's screen alongside an animated version of the breathing child that provides a visual confirmation of the breathing rate.

In tests, the app was able to provide an accurate account of the child's respiratory rate in only ten seconds, significantly less time than the 60 seconds required by the conventional stopwatch method. The team next hopes to combine the app with their Phone Oximeter pulse oximeter to create an inexpensive and portable pneumonia detection tool.
