Embroidered Circuits Turn Shirts into Antennas

Embroidered Circuits Turn Shirts into Antennas
Apr-17-16
Researchers have brought up a step closer to wearable electronics with the development of embroidered circuits that can be integrated into textiles.

The circuits are made up of fine metal threads that have been embroidered onto the fabric using a sewing machine able to create patterns sent from a computer. By controlling the pattern of the embroidery, different products—such as an antenna or RFID chip—can be integrated into the materials (including rubber) with 0.1 mm precision.

The team hopes to continue to develop the technology to the point where it could be used to create an array of new functional textiles, from caps that sense brain activity to shirts that function as antennas.
