Etching Technique Increase Metals' Bonding Abilties

Sep-10-16 An innovative etching technique from a team at Kiel University lets metal be bonded to a wide array of materials, without welding.

The technique, an electro-chemical “nanoscale-sculpturing” process, creates an array of tiny hooks that will interlock “like a three-dimensional puzzle.” When combined with the use of a bonding polymer, the hooks will connect to create a virtually unbreakable bond. The etching process only affects a very thin layer of the metal's outer surface, and also makes the surface more water repellant.
