Using Radiation to Read Closed Books

Using Radiation to Read Closed Books
Sep-10-16
Researchers have developed a technique that allows them to read a closed book with terahertz radiation.

The method, from a team at MIT and Georgia Tech, uses short bursts of terahertz radiation to identify the individual pages in the book based on the location of air pockets between pages. Once the pages have been detected, the system can then produce an image of the words by measuring the difference in light wave absorption between the blank paper and the ink. A pair of algorithms developed by the teams then work together to create an image clear enough to allow the text to be read.

At the moment, the system can identify the words on the first nine stacked pages of a book with no cover.

Printed books may live forever, if they can be printed affordably on demand. Could this UV-printing (Feb-7-17) be used with Radiation technology (Sep-10-16) to print a whole closed book? Or each page is reactive with a unique wavelength. An “X-ray-laser” prints a closed book page by page.
