Facial Recognition Detects Newborn Pain

Facial Recognition Detects Newborn Pain
Apr-12-17
A facial recognition software able to decipher a newborn’s expressions could determine the difference between pain and hunger.

Designed for newborns hospitalized in the NICU, the system was developed using cameras and microphones to capture the expressions and sounds of the infants before, during, and after procedures. That information, along with the knowledge of trained and experienced nurses, was then used to determine the characteristics of a ‘hungry’ cry versus a ‘pained cry.’

In a test with 53 newborns, the system was able to estimate the babies’ discomfort, and compare that estimation to that of trained nurses. The team hopes that eventually, the system will allow for a way to monitor the children continuously for discomfort.
