Flat Lens Focuses with Silicon Posts

Flat Lens Focuses with Silicon Posts
May-12-15
Researchers have developed a flat lens that works just as well as a curved one, opening the door to smaller cameras and microscopes as well as unforeseen applications.

Standard lenses achieve their magnifying effect by delaying light as it passes through the different thickness of glass created by the curve. To achieve that same delay effect on a flat lense, the team from Caltech placed silicon posts of different diameters on the lens. By placing the posts in specific locations, the team was able to guide the light to create an area of focus.
