Floating Drone Collects Toxic Algae Blooms

Floating Drone Collects Toxic Algae Blooms
Nov-06-15
A new “algae mower” floating drone able to harvest algae for biofuel could help clear dangerous algae blooms while also propelling itself though the water.

Conceived by Fredrik Ausinsch as part of his master’s project, the drone would be equipped with a pair of electric pumps and a hydrogen fuel cell. The pumps would suck the algae and water into a ‘dewatering system’ that separates the water from the algae biomass. That biomass would then be stored and dried by the heat from the hydrogen fuel cell while the water assists with the drone’s propulsion.

The drone would be operated via remote control by a person in a nearby boat.
