Making Glass as Strong as Steel

Making Glass as Strong as Steel
Nov-05-15
By adding a little gas to the mix, researchers have created a transparent glass that is almost as tough as steel.

Created by a team of Japanese researchers, the glass has been strengthened by adding alumina to the silicon dioxide (which makes up most of oxide glass). Previously, however, adding large amounts of alumina to the mix causes the gas to crystalize when it touches the sides of its container. To overcome the obstacle, the team removed the solid container altogether, and instead used gas to combine the chemicals in air, resulting in a clear, strong glass made up of 50 percent alumina.
