Fly's Eye Inspires Anti-Fog Material

Fly's Eye Inspires Anti-Fog Material
May-30-14
A new design based on a fly's eyes could be used to create fog-free windows as well as help protect electronics from freezing.

The researchers were intrigued by the common fly's ability to see in humid environments without its eyes fogging up—although its body will become covered with condensation. When the team examined the fly's eye closely, they realized it is made up of a pattern of hexagonal units covered in small, 'bubble-like protuberances.' Using bio-inspired nanostructures made of zinc, the researchers created a synthesized version of the eye, which proved to have the same powerful hydrophobic characteristics as the fly's eye.

The team believes the material could eventually be engineered to be self-cleaning, anti-corrosive and anti-freezing as well, since its hydrophobic characteristics are so strong.
