Food Flavoring Leads to Non-Toxic Solar Cells

Food Flavoring Leads to Non-Toxic Solar Cells
Oct-02-16
An innovative new use of a food flavoring ingredient has led to the development of more environmentally friendly solar cells.

Typically, manufacturing plastic solar cells involves using environmentally hazardous halogen-containing solvents, which also must be applied in a controlled environment. To offer a non-toxic alternative, Long Ye of North Carolina State University created a proof-of-concept, semi-printed solar cell using o-methylanisole (o-MA), a common food flavor additive, as the solvent. Not only is o-MA non-toxic, it can also be applied at room temperature using a blade coating process, allowing the technology to be scaled up.
