Startup Freight Farms hopes to make locally-sourced, fresh food more of a reality with its self-contained farms housed in shipping containers.
Founded by Jon Friedman and Brad McNamara, the Freight Farms are made from used, insulated shipping containers that have been equipped with a hydroponics system as well as ways to monitor and control temperature, carbon dioxide, and other environmental factors. The plants are grown in an artificial medium made of recycled plastic bottles and encouraged to grow vertically, which saves space. Owners can stay in touch with their farms using the system’s own 4G hotspot and their personal iOS device, which allows them to monitor conditions from anywhere in the world.
