A prototype urinal able to generate electricity from urine could offer relief to people in refugee camps.
The urinal, created in partnership between the University of the West of England and Oxfam, is equipped with microbial fuel cell stacks that covert the urine into electricity to power the urinal's lights. The urinal is currently being tested at the University, and the team believes the unit can be built to be both affordable and efficient.
Refugee camps at night are dangerous places, especially for women. The hope is that the illuminated urinals could a bit of light to help make the area more secure.
