Genetically Engineered Algae for Food and Fuel

Genetically Engineered Algae for Food and Fuel
May-06-17
Researchers have created genetically engineered algae that could provide a renewable source of food and fuel.

The algae were developed by a team at the University of California, San Diego in cooperation with Sapphire Energy. The goal of the research was to create an engineered algae that can be grown outdoors safely, without endangering native algae populations. As Stephen Mayfield explained, since genetically engineered algae offer a quicker road to ‘domestication,’ the new process could usher in crops of useful algae much sooner than the natural agricultural process.
