The HALOsonic technology reduces road noise by cancelling it out with some carefully planned noise of its own.
Keeping with the trend of ever-lighter vehicles, many car manufacturers have been reducing the amount of noise-dampening insulation used in the cars—which in turn increases the amount of road noise that can leak through. In search of a quieter ride, a team at Harman International created the HALOsonic system, which is based on the same noise-cancelling technology found in high-end headphones.
In order to adjust to the fluctuations of road noise, however, the HALOsonic system needed some specific tweaks. The system includes accelerometers that can monitor the vibrations caused by the road in real-time. That data is then crunched by an algorithm that creates specifically-designed inverse sound waves that are played through the car’s audio system to cancel out the noise. Music and other more desired sounds are not affected.
